Irradiation with the PACT 200 light source converts a side-effect-free dye solution into a highly effective broad-spectrum antiseptic. 99.99 % of all oral bacteria are killed during the 30 – 60 seconds of treatment. Biofilms are inactivated, viruses and fungi effectively reduced – quickly, safely and without pain and without discolouration or side effects.

The principle of photo-activated chemotherapy (PACT) is based on the killing of bacteria using a photosensitizer (toluidine blue, abbreviated TBO), which produces active oxygen upon irradiation (30s – 60s, depending on application) with light of 635 nm at a power of up to 200 mW. This will destroy the bacterial cell walls and result in destruction of the germs. The PACT system was developed and assessed regarding efficiency in a number of studies. It is completely painless. For ten years, PACT has been used in dentistry. In photodynamic germ reduction with toluidine blue, so far no damage to the tissue, allergies and no other side effects have been observed.
